Halloween falls on a Saturday in 2026, which means one thing: the parties will be big. Between costume parties at bars and clubs downtown and house parties across the GTA, October 31 is one of the busiest party nights of the year in Toronto. And at a Halloween party, the drinks are part of the costume.

The trouble is that a lot of “spooky” cocktails look great and taste terrible: too sweet, too artificial, too much food colouring. Here are six Halloween drinks that look the part and actually taste good, a big-batch punch for parties, and some garnish ideas to make your bar look the part.

1. Black Magic Blackberry Smash

  • Muddle 5–6 blackberries with 0.5 oz simple syrup.
  • Add 1.5 oz vodka, such as Absolut, and 0.75 oz lime juice.
  • Shake with ice and double-strain into a coupe or a rocks glass over crushed ice.

Deep purple, tart and fruity. Garnish with a blackberry on a cocktail pick and a sprig of rosemary for a “witchy” look.

2. The Zombie

A tiki classic from the 1930s that has the perfect name for Halloween. It is famously strong, so serve just one per guest.

  • 1 oz white rum, such as Bacardi White
  • 1 oz gold rum, such as Bacardi Gold
  • 0.5 oz dark or spiced rum, such as Captain Morgan
  • 0.75 oz lime juice, 0.5 oz pineapple juice, 0.5 oz grenadine
  • 1 dash Angostura bitters

Shake with ice, strain into a tall glass over crushed ice and garnish with mint and a cherry.

3. Vampire’s Kiss

  • Pour 0.5 oz raspberry liqueur into a champagne flute.
  • Add 1 oz vodka.
  • Top with chilled sparkling rosé like Luc Belaire Rosé.

For a dramatic touch, rim the glass with red sugar or let a little grenadine “drip” down the inside of the glass.

4. Poison Apple

Shake 1.5 oz Crown Royal or another Canadian whisky, 2 oz apple cider, 0.5 oz lemon juice and 0.25 oz cinnamon syrup with ice. Strain over ice in a rocks glass and garnish with a thin apple slice. Warm, autumnal and dangerously easy to drink.

5. Witches’ Brew

Fill a tall glass with ice, add 1 oz vodka and 1 oz melon liqueur, top with lemon-lime soda and add a splash of lime juice. The bright green colour comes from the liqueur, not food colouring. Garnish with a gummy worm hanging over the rim.

6. Smoky Old Fashioned

For guests who want something more grown-up, make a classic Old Fashioned with 2 oz whisky, 0.25 oz simple syrup and 2 dashes bitters, then add a twist of flamed orange peel. Hold the peel over the glass and squeeze it near a lit match: the oils spark and leave a toasty, smoky aroma.

Big-batch party punch: Blood Orange Graveyard Punch

  • 1 bottle (750 ml) vodka or white rum
  • 1 L blood orange or regular orange juice
  • 500 ml cranberry juice
  • 250 ml lime juice
  • 1 L ginger ale, added before serving

Mix in a large punch bowl with plenty of ice and sliced oranges. For a creepy effect, freeze water in a clean rubber glove (remove the glove before adding) to make a floating “hand.” Makes about 20 servings.

Spooky garnish and presentation ideas

  • Black sugar or black salt rims using activated charcoal sugar or black sanding sugar.
  • Lychee “eyeballs”: stuff peeled lychees with a blueberry or a cherry and skewer them.
  • Gummy worms, plastic spiders (on the outside of the glass only) and candy eyes.
  • Dry ice fog: it looks amazing, but it must be handled carefully. Never put dry ice directly into a drink someone will drink; it can cause serious internal burns if swallowed. Place it in a separate container of warm water underneath or beside the punch bowl, handle it with gloves or tongs, and keep it away from children.

How much to buy for a Halloween party

Plan on about two drinks per guest in the first hour and one per hour after. For a four-hour party with 20 guests, that is about 100 drinks: a batch of punch (20 servings), two or three bottles of spirits for cocktails, and a few cases of beer. See our party alcohol calculator for more.

Keep it safe and fun

  • Label the punch so guests know it contains alcohol, and keep a separate, clearly labelled alcohol-free punch for kids and non-drinkers.
  • Costumes and crowded streets make the night busy. Plan rides home in advance and never drive after drinking. Our guide to hosting responsibly in Ontario has more tips.
  • Trick-or-treaters: if you are hosting at home, keep alcohol away from the door where kids will be coming by.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good Halloween cocktail for a crowd?

A big-batch punch, like the Blood Orange Graveyard Punch above, is the easiest way to serve a crowd. Make it ahead and add the ginger ale just before serving.

Is it safe to use dry ice in drinks?

Not directly in the drink. Dry ice can cause serious injury if swallowed. Use it in a separate container under or beside the punch bowl for the fog effect.

Can I get alcohol delivered on Halloween in Toronto?

Yes. Instabooze delivers vodka, rum, whisky, beer and wine across Toronto and the GTA, including late on Halloween night. You must be 19 or older and show ID.
